Flare Gas Recovery System: Emerging Technique to Recover and Enhance Energy Efficiency

Flare Gas Recovery Systems (FGRS) are specially designed compression packages that recover and repurpose the gasses and emissions that are generally burned during the flaring process. The process involves seizing the gasses during the flare processes and their subsequent compression via liquid ring compressors. The process is critical for the safe operations of the refineries and petrochemical facilities. The recovered gasses are then available for reuse within the fuel gas system of the petrochemical facilities. Gas flaring is generated through the combustion of gas during the petrochemical processes such as oil and gas recovery and is one of the most prominent reasons for increased greenhouse emissions. Flare Gas Recovery Systems play a pivotal role in minimizing or eliminating gas flaring.

The developments in the flare gas recovery system and their extensive application in the petrochemical industries and refineries are propelling the growth of the market. The increasing levels of carbon in the atmosphere have become a matter of grave concern, and the major players of the industry are investing in expanding their research to develop innovative solutions for the recovery of flared gas. Refining capacity across the world has escalated and is expected to increase the demand for advanced flare gas recovery systems and thereby bolster the growth of the market over the coming years. Developed and developing nations are actively implementing viable solutions to flare gases due to increasing investment and stringent environmental regulations, thereby driving the market growth. For instance, Nigeria decreased gas flaring to 10% from 25% over the last decade and announced a three-point smart strategy in 2018 to combat flare gas emissions. The country is working towards eliminating routine flares from the gas produces across the country. Moreover, the EHS guidelines set by the World Bank Group announced the target of net zero flare emissions by 2025.  The increasing efforts of the oil and natural gas companies to incorporate flare gas recovery systems to meet the emission targets is primarily driving the market growth.

Some of the notable companies operating in the flare gas recovery system market are Pioneer Energy, Inc., Costain Group Plc, Aereon International, Gardner Denver, Inc., Honeywell International, Inc., Frames Group, GTUIT Inc., Gas Technologies LLC, Wartsila Corporation, and ZEECO Inc. The World Bank is also pursuing a strategic incentive program to encourage the governments and private companies to minimize their gas flares through the Routine Zero Flaring 2030 initiative.
